Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) - CAAIN serves as Canada’s primary hub for agricultural AI adoption. More than 80 per cent of CAAIN-funded projects incorporate AI, addressing sector challenges such as labour shortages, productivity decline, and food security by connecting innovators and producers nationwide. Its work aligns with the Sovereign AI Compute Strategy through high-performance computing requirements and Canadian owned data platforms like SOIL HUB and SAFE HUB. CAAIN also advances the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy by turning research into practical tools, including autonomous machinery and dairy management systems. Through accessible, producer focused demonstration programs, CAAIN contributes directly to the Canadian AI Adoption Initiative.

The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) is a not-for-profit organization supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) that advances new knowledge and technological solutions to address the most significant challenges and opportunities in Canada’s agri-food sector. CAAIN invests in research and innovation that enhance precision, productivity, and value for producers and primary processors, while driving affordability across the agriculture production and primary processing supply chain. This work supports researchers, entrepreneurs, and businesses in driving economic growth, employment, and global competitiveness. CAAIN supports the development and adoption of agricultural technologies, including automation and robotics, data-driven decision-making, and the validation and demonstration of emerging technologies. This is achieved through innovation funding calls that help early-stage companies develop prototypes, minimum viable products (MVPs), AI models, and commercialization-ready solutions, as well as through a national smart farm network—a platform for validating and demonstrating technologies across diverse Canadian geographies, production systems, and agroclimatic zones. Looking ahead, CAAIN will continue to expand its impact by investing in AI-enabled, data-driven agtech that strengthens Canada’s food security and food sovereignty.
